SonosSonos, the premier manufacturer of easy to use and set-up multi-room music system, has announced a new product called Sonos S5 ZonePlayer.

It features 5 speakers (two tweeters, two 3″ mid-range drivers and a 3.5″ woofer), each powered by a dedicated Class-D digital amplifier, auto-detecting 3.5mm audio line-in and a headphone connection that mutes speakers when headphones are plugged in.

There’s no manual controls on the box other than Volume and Mute buttons, but ZonePlayer S5 could be controlled by the standard $350 Sonos LCD touch screen remote, by iPhone Controller application (available for free from Apple AppStore) or from the desktop software.

When connected to the Internet it can access a plethora of online services including Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, SIRIUS, Last.fm or WinAmp as well as your entire iTunes library from any PC, Mac or NAS on your local network. To get all the online radio benefits at least one ZonePlayer or ZoneBridge (sold separately) should be connected to your local network with Cat5 Ethernet cable, the rest of the system could be completely wireless (sans the power cord of course).

The ZonePlayer S5 will seamlessly integrate into any existing Sonos multi-room music system and will allow you to play either the same tune as other music zones or to select its own source.

Sonos ZonePlayer S5 like most other Sonos components comes in white finish only with light metallic grill and will be retailing for $399 in the late October.
